Bandhej — also spelled Bandhani — is one of the oldest and most beloved textile traditions of India. The word comes from the Sanskrit bandh, meaning "to tie." It refers to the process of creating patterns on fabric by tying tiny portions of cloth with thread before dyeing, so that the tied areas resist the dye and form intricate white or lighter-coloured dots, waves, and spirals on a vibrant background.
A 5,000-Year History
Archaeological evidence suggests that tie-dye techniques were practised in the Indus Valley Civilisation. In Rajasthan, Bandhej reached extraordinary refinement in the royal courts, where it was worn as a mark of prestige and gifted as wedding trousseau. The tradition has continued unbroken to this day, with artisan communities in cities like Sawai Madhopur, Jodhpur, and Jaipur carrying the craft forward through generations.
How Bandhej is Made
The process begins with selecting the fabric — cotton, georgette, or silk. A design is then mapped onto the cloth using a dotting method. Skilled artisans pinch tiny points of fabric and bind them tightly with thread — a single dupatta may require 5,000 to 15,000 individual knots. The bound cloth is then immersed in a dye bath. After drying, the threads are removed to reveal the pattern beneath. The result is always slightly different from the last — that unpredictability is part of Bandhej's charm.
Traditional Patterns
- Ekdali — single dot, the simplest and most elegant form
- Leheriya — diagonal wave stripes created by rolling and tying the fabric
- Chakri — circular concentric patterns representing the sun
- Bundi — clusters of dots arranged in geometric formations
- Shikari — complex hunting-scene patterns, historically reserved for royalty
