Rajasthan is famous for two spectacular tie-dye traditions: Bandhej (Bandhani) and Leheriya. Both involve tying fabric before dyeing, but the techniques, patterns, and results are very different. If you have ever wondered which is which, this guide will help you tell them apart.
What is Bandhej?
Bandhej involves tying tiny individual points of fabric with thread to create dot-based patterns. The knots are usually arranged in geometric formations — rows, circles, spirals, or waves. When the threads are removed after dyeing, each knot reveals a small dot or circle of the original fabric colour surrounded by the dye. A single Bandhej dupatta may have thousands of these hand-tied dots.
What is Leheriya?
Leheriya (meaning "waves" in Hindi) is made by rolling the fabric diagonally into a long tube and then tying it at intervals before dyeing. The result is a pattern of diagonal stripes that seems to shimmer as the fabric moves — mimicking the waves of water. Multiple colours can be achieved by untying, re-tying, and dyeing again.
Key Differences
- Pattern: Bandhej creates dots; Leheriya creates diagonal stripes
- Technique: Bandhej ties individual points; Leheriya rolls the whole fabric
- Time: Bandhej is more time-intensive (thousands of individual knots); Leheriya is faster
- Occasion: Leheriya is especially associated with the monsoon festival of Teej
Can They Be Combined?
Yes — and the combination is called Mothda. It combines the diagonal stripe technique of Leheriya with Bandhej-style dot patterns for a richly textured fabric that is highly prized.
